...but turned off to the left at the main gates, with a view of the outskirts of Preston just out of sight to the west and Longridge Fell ahead. Heavy rain and gale force winds were forecast.... |

The walk diverted briefly into the gorge of Hoghton Bottoms and along the River Darwen which once powered Higher Mill (above) |

| Just beyond the dramatic weir the diversion ended - though not without some fun on the way - before returning to the main route | |

| From here the walk turned uphill where the wind grew fiercer than ever around Woodcock Hill - but still fortunately no rain! | |

| and there was Blackburn in the valley ahead, half hidden by trees | |

| On into Big Cover Wood and down to where it met Witton Park, welcome refreshments and then home - and not a drop of rain! |
