Hoghton church Hoghton Tower
Holy Trinity church, Hoghton The Walk set off towards Hoghton Tower

Hoghton Tower

...but turned off to the left at the main gates, with a view of the outskirts of Preston just out of sight to the west and Longridge Fell ahead.

Heavy rain and gale force winds were forecast....

Woodland at Hoghton woodland
The wind was already quite fierce so a sheltered stretch of woodland provided a welcome respite
Higher Mill   Gorge
Higher Mill   Viaduct carrying the railway from Preston to Blackburn and East Lancs
The walk diverted briefly into the gorge of Hoghton Bottoms and along the River Darwen which once powered Higher Mill (above)
weir closer view of the weir
Just beyond the dramatic weir the diversion ended - though not without some fun on the way - before returning to the main route
Improvised swing
From here the walk turned uphill where the wind grew fiercer than ever around Woodcock Hill - but still fortunately no rain!
and there was Blackburn in the valley ahead, half hidden by trees
Blackburn
On into Big Cover Wood and down to where it met Witton Park, welcome refreshments and then home - and not a drop of rain!
