Building Bridges

Regular Notices

This is the new project for working with young people following on from the successful New Start with Jesus School Road-Show last year. It was decided, after discussion throughout the diocese  to appoint a full-time trainee-worker with young people for a year.

The aim is not just for the person appointed to take over the task of 'building bridges' with young people in the schools and their parishes but to help and support parishioners to join in this task with ideas and enthusiasm, to build his or her own confidence and skills and also to have access to formal training opportunities as appropriate during their stay with us.

Ginny Ellwood

our project leader, from September 2002
Office Base: English Martyrs

Ginny Ellwood grew up in Carnforth and has been actively involved in the parish for most of her life. Having trained as a Guider, Ginny has experience of working with Guides (11-15 yrs) and also Rainbows (6-8 yrs)

After a trip to Lourdes accompanying an 18 year old with severe learning difficulties and supporting as severely disabled 12 year old on an outdoor activities week Ginny was led to work with people. she completed a degree in Occupational therapy and spent a year working as part of a community based team in the North-East. Through this work, Ginny learnt a great deal about a wide variety of people of all age groups and from different social and cultural backgrounds.

Ginny is taking up the challenge of this Youth Work Trainee post as a stepping stone for her personal and career development. The role will allow her to gain valuable experience in working alongside children and adults that will be helpful in her long term goal to specialise as an Occupational Therapist working with children and young people.

During her 6th form years Ginny was a member of the Diocesan Young People's group which gave her opportunities to work with her peers developing skills in team work and leadership in a variety of settings, together with preparing and leading prayer and working with clergy. While at university Ginny gave up three days to take part in the Road Show event at Cardinal Allen High School. She has recently returned from the World Youth Event in Toronto, representing her home parish.

Ginny's aspirations are:
'to remain positive in all that I do - to stay in touch with the important people I meet along the path of live - to develop my career as an Occupational therapist - to continue to be an active member of the Church and my community (wherever that may be) - to continue to develop my relationship with God.'
