A few reports from previous years

July 2003 Christian Aid
Many thanks to all who collected envelopes this year. The total amount raised was £689. 19p.

London Marathon 2003
A big thank you to Angela McNeilly who finished in 4 hrs 21 mins and raised £1400 for Cancer Research UK

August 2002
CAFOD sent thanks for the magnificent sum of £901 which was raised in the collection in August 2002 for their work in southern Africa. This went directly to the people in need.

Unfortunately this need in Africa never seems to go away. Every year there is famine throughout Africa, not so long ago floods in Mozambique when a letter of thanks was received from Cafod for the £930 raised by the S.V.P. appeal.

"We were greatly moved by the concern and kindness of our supporters here in the North west who responded so quickly to the urgent needs of our brothers and sisters in Mozambique."

CAFOD made an immediate response to the cry for help which came through our partners in Mozambique. Years of hard work bore fruit when for the first time Mozambique was self-sufficient in food production. Ten years of development work were washed away in the floods. Millions of people were affected and much of the country's infrastructures totally destroyed.

Our partner, Bishop Bernadino Mandlate pleaded for help in providing food, blankets, shelter and basic health care for his dying people of Mozambique. He also begged us to bring pressure to bear on our government and the international community to ensure that the country's debt was cancelled. He went on to say that he believes that morally and financially the debts have already been paid back. A year later very little has been done!

CAFOD, thanks to the people of Our Lady & St Edward, we will continue to work alongside the people of Mozambique as they struggle to rebuild their lives and communities. Many thanks once more for your support. Please keep the people of Mozambique in your prayers."

Chernobyl

The Preston branch of the charity Medicine and Chernobyl was formed in 1993. Its main objective is to give respite breaks to children affected by the nuclear disaster. One month's break in England eating uncontaminated food and breathing clean air helps the child's immune system to recover and can add up to 2 years to life expectancy.

The children, aged between 8 and 16, stay with local families. During the day they have lessons or are taken on days out to local attractions.

Our parish first became involved when an appeal for families appeared on our Sunday notice sheet. Three families answered the call and hosted children that year. Since that time many more have joined the scheme. The parish has also helped with the leaving parties for the children and have taken them on the annual trip to the Lake District - where it nearly always rains!

The Preston branch of the charity also takes over much needed aid to Belarus, the country most affected by the radioactive fall-out. Our parish raised over £2,500 for an incubator for premature babies. Many other items have been delivered to the numerous orphanages, hospitals and other institutions.

Fr Bernard travelled to Belarus in 1999 to help out on the refurbishment of the toilets and shower blocks at an orphanage at Osipovichi. He saw at first hand the conditions the children have to live with and felt it right that we should try to continue with our help.

Our Impact Group also recorded two songs written by one of our parishioners to help raise funds for the orphanage.

During 2001 the Preston Branch were hoping to carry out similar work at an orphanage at Barsuki near Mogilev.

St Vincent de Paul Society

A rule of the society is that publicity should not be sought, but its work is generally well-known. Members regularly visit the elderly at home and in hospital, and collect and distribute unwanted furniture, give advice and assistance and sometimes financial help to the needy. They also hold regular days of recollection, with Mass at midday, in the lounge of the Parish Centre for senior citizens and the housebound. They arrange transport where needed and provide lunch.

Report 2001
"The first meeting of our conference was held on 27th March 1981, and our first collection on 21st June realised £83.29. We are grateful for that early support which has continued and grown over the years. To date your generosity has amounted to a total of £25,000. This has been used to good effect both locally and abroad for specific purposes notified in advance.

Sr Mary Lucy has received a clean bill of health. She spoke a few words at the end of Mass thanking the parish for their prayers and support over the last eleven years for the parish of Kalomo, Zambia. The donations in the buckets after Sunday Masses have enabled a new house to be built and she will take back seed for them so that they will be able to grow more food for themselves next year.

* Sister Mary Lucey was given the 'all clear and returned to Zambia on July 4th 2002.

* Peter (our Deacon) visited Zambia in August 2002 with Fr. John Walsh. They were based with Fr. Paul Swarbrick in Chivuna but spent a few days in Kalomo. There they met two young Zambian priests who look after the parish.
